Oceanskies Crew Passes Annual MLC Inspection

Oceanskies Crew Limited, (OCL), the yacht crew employment and payroll outsourcing division of Oceanskies, is pleased to announce that they have successfully passed their annual Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) audit by Lloyd’s Register. This means that the Statement of Compliance issued by Lloyd’s Register to OCL is validated for another year confirming that the company is fully compliant with standard A1.4 and guidelines B1.4 of the MLC 2006.

The MLC requires crew employment companies to conform to a number of stringent requirements and ongoing audits by either classification societies or flag states. OCL is able to efficiently employ and pay crew working onboard any yacht of any size whether operated privately or commercially.Pricing is really straight forward at EUR 260.00 take on per crew member, (including contract), then EUR 65.00 per month per crew member plus EUR 15.00 bank charges.

The system works by the yacht owner outsourcing the employment of their crew to OCL either on a stand alone basis or as part of a third party management structure. OCL takes care of the crew’s employment and payroll on behalf of the yacht owner or yacht manager in an administratively efficient manner from our home island of Guernsey.

OCL currently employs crew onboard yachts ranging in size from small single Captain vessels to the largest superyachts.

The key advantages of the Oceanskies Crew employment service are as follows:

  • OCL is issued with a Statement of Compliance issued by Lloyd’s Register to OCL confirming that the company is fully compliant with standard A1.4 and guidelines B1.4 of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC).

  • Crew are employed by OCL separately from the underlying client and/or the vessel owner.

  • All crew are employed through a Seafarers Employment Agreement (SEA) in line with MLC best practice requirements.

  • All crew are employed from Guernsey by a Guernsey based company (i.e. non-EU) without any deductions being made at source in Guernsey for tax or national insurance/social security.

  • OCL is not only fully based in Guernsey but it is also run by genuine Guernsey residents unlike some crew companies that are registered offshore but managed onshore.

  • OCL charges on a simple fixed fee basis rather than as a percentage of the crew member’s salary.

  • It is as cost-effective and straight forward to employ one crew member as it is to employ many crew members making OCL an ideal employment and payroll vehicle for both small and large yachts.

  • MLC certification and ongoing compliance costs are not charged to the client unlike many of our competitors who charge clients for their initial MLC certification and their ongoing MLC compliance.

OCL has invested in a sophisticated and secure cloud based crew payroll software programme. The software assists in enabling OCL to ensure that record keeping and payments are handled efficiently and accurately and includes various functions including:

  • The automatic notification of salary payments to crew members via email attaching payslips.

  • The invoicing and payment of crew in multiple currencies.

  • The apportionment of salary payments for the convenience of crew members in line with MLC guidance.

  • The notification of up and coming qualification renewals, training courses, visas and medical certificates.

Oceanskies Crew can also support yacht owners, yacht mangers and yacht crew in the following areas:

  • Assistance with ENIM registration and payments in France.

  • Assistance with social security registration and payments in other EU and suitably qualifying foreign jurisdictions, such as Malta where through OCL there also exists the opportunity to affiliate EU resident seafarers working on Malta flagged yachts to the Malta social security system. Contribution rates are 10% paid by the seafarer and 10% paid by the employer capped currently at 43.85 Euros per week for the seafarer and 43.85 Euros for the employer.

  • Facilitation of private welfare schemes in conjunction with third party partners.
