SGI Guernsey / Channel Islands Aircraft Registry Presentation

Duncan Swanson of Oceanskies was pleased to attend a seminar held yesterday evening (the 16th January) held at the Guernsey Aero Club concerning progress on the development of either a stand alone Guernsey aircraft register or a Channel Islands aircraft register incorporating Jersey.

The presentation was chaired by the Channel Islands Director of Civil Aviation, Fergus Woods, whilst Luc Beaudoin and  Fons Schaefers of SGI Aviation provided an update on their progress in developing the registry  in a unique public private partnership with the government of Guernsey.

It was revealed at the presentation that talks are very much still underway between Guernsey, Jersey and SGI to ascertain whether the register would proceed as solely a Guernsey initiative or whether Jersey would become involved.

It seems evident that there is a strong desire for the islands to proceed with a joint initiative on the register either with two separate registries controlled by an overlying authority or by having one register shared by the two islands.

It was mentioned however that time was rapidly running out for Jersey to decide on whether they wanted to become involved with  the project because both Guernsey and SGI had to maintain momentum and keep the project rolling forward in order to achieve a planned launch in the second half of 2013.

The presentation confirmed that the registration prefix 2- followed by four letters, i.e. 2-MUCH would be allocated.

SGI Aviation highlighted key target areas for the registry including locally based light aircraft, internationally based private jet aircraft, manufacturer white tail aircraft and commercial airliners operating on repositioning flights between leases or on delivery to new owners.

It was noted that the registry would not be accessible to any aircraft operating for hire and reward, i.e. active airliners and charter aircraft.
