Located in the English Channel near the Bay of St Malo, Jersey is a British Crown Dependency. While not part of the UK or EU, the UK Government is constitutionally responsible for its defence and international affairs.

Jersey is a well-established international finance centre, known for its political stability, low taxation, and strong regulatory framework. These factors, combined with specific tax and crew employment advantages, make Jersey a popular choice for yacht registration.

Jersey is part of the Red Ensign Group (REG), operating its registry independently but under the oversight of the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). Active since 1803, the registry now holds over 2,000 vessels.

The Flag

Yachts registered in Jersey may either fly the standard undefaced Red Ensign (“Red Duster”) or the Jersey Red Ensign which is defaced with the Jersey coat of arms and a Plantagenet crown.

Port of Registry

Despite Jersey having several named harbours, the official Port of Registry in Jersey is simply “JERSEY” and should be noted as such on vessel documents.

Note: ST. HELIER is not a port of registry.

Radio Licensing

Jersey relies on the UK communications regulator OFCOM, which issues ship radio licences for Jersey registered yachts. Holding a valid radio licence is a legal requirement, as it assigns a Call Sign and MMSI number necessary for operating onboard communication and safety equipment, including VHF radios, EPIRBs, and AIS transmitters.

Is my yacht eligible for Jersey registration?

The Jersey ships registry is a Category 2 Red Ensign registry, allowing the registration of pleasure and commercial yachts of up to 399 Gross Tons (GT).

Am I eligible for Jersey registration?

The Jersey Ships register is an international registry, open to:

  • British citizens and companies
  • Citizens and companies from the European Union, European Economic Area, Commonwealth and British Overseas Territories
  • Citizens and companies from approved countries: Argentina, Aruba, Bahrain, Brazil, The Canary Islands, China (incl. Hong Kong), Faroe Islands, Haiti, Israel, Japan, Liberia, Madeira, Marshall Islands, Monaco, Panama, South Korea, Switzerland, Suriname, United Arab Emirates, United States of America.

The Certificate of British Registry

The Jersey Certificate of Registry (also known as the Blue Book, aptly named after the small blue protective cover the certificate is kept inside) is a traditional A3 sized paper document. The certificate includes essential details such as vessel name, official number, ship type, HIN, and dimensions.

Important: The Certificate of Registry is not proof of ownership. Ownership is determined through legal documents such as a Builder’s Certificate or Bill of Sale.

How long is the Jersey registration valid?

The Jersey full registration is valid for 10-years.

Can I get a provisional Jersey registration?

Yes – it is possible to obtain a 3-month provisional registration using scanned copies of the signed registration forms. This allows for the vessel to sail and obtain insurance coverage whilst the original documentation for the full registration is being secured.

Note: the registry also requires a tonnage survey to be completed and approved in order to issue a provisional certificate.

How long does full Jersey registration take?

Processing time is dependent on availability of title documentation and tonnage measurement survey. Documents must be submitted to the registry in original form, as the registry will not accept digital copies for full registration. The entire process can be completed in two weeks, sometimes earlier if everything is in order and submitted in good time.

How much does Jersey registration cost?

Our full registration package starts from £3,000.

Commercial use & compliance

Yachts can operate commercially under Jersey registration if they meet the necessary commercial coding requirements.

Is there a Jersey Small Ships Register (SSR)?

Yes, there is an SSR in Jersey which is only available to those individuals who are ordinarily resident in Jersey.

Does the yacht physically need to go to Jersey for registration?

The yacht does not need to be physically present in Jersey at any stage of the registration process.
