The United Kingdom Ship Register (UKSR) is one of the world’s most respected yacht registries, offering Part 1 registration for both pleasure and commercial yachts.

As a global maritime leader, the United Kingdom (UK) boasts a long tradition of excellence in legal, arbitration, insurance, shipbroking, and financial services. London remains the center for maritime business services and the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

With its high standards, the UKSR is recognised as a top-performing registry on the Paris and Tokyo MoU White Lists. Administered by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), the UKSR registry department is based in Cardiff, Wales.

The UK’s maritime legacy dates back to the 17th century, and today, its fleet remains one of the largest in the world, governed under the Merchant Shipping Act of 1995.

Owners of UK registered yachts are able to fly the prestigious red ensign that is widely recognised and held in high regard throughout the world.

Ports of Registry

There are 116 designated ports of registry under Part 1 of the UK Register. The full list is available on the GOV.UK website here.

London remains the most popular choice.

Radio Licensing

The UK communications regulator, OFCOM, issues ship radio licenses for UK registered yachts. Holding a valid radio license is a legal requirement, as it assigns a Call Sign and MMSI number necessary for operating onboard communication and safety equipment, including VHF radios, EPIRBs, and AIS transmitters.
