St. Kitts and Nevis is a twin-island nation located in the Eastern Caribbean, approximately 1,300 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. The name St. Kitts is shortened from its official name, St. Christopher given to it by Christopher Columbus when he landed there in 1493.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Ship Registry (SKANReg) was established in 2005 and operated under the Department of Maritime Affairs, Ministry of Tourism & International Transport.

With over 4,500 registered vessels and more than 7.2 million tons registered, SKANReg offers a fast, efficient, and cost-effective registration service. Its headquarters are in London, with a global network of over 60 Maritime Registrars (MR), including Oceanskies, making registration seamless and accessible worldwide.

SKANReg laws are based on English Law and the British Merchant Shipping Act.

The Flag

St. Kitts and Nevis registered yacht owners fly the national flag which features a yellow-edged black bank containing two white stars that divides diagonally from the lower hoist-side corner, with a green upper triangle and red lower triangle.

Ports of Registry

  • BASSETERRE – For foreign individuals, foreign corporations, and St Kitts corporations.
  • CHARLESTOWN – For Nevis individuals and Nevis corporations.

Radio Licensing

Radio licenses are issued directly by SKANReg.

Holding a valid radio license is a legal requirement, as it assigns a Call Sign and MMSI number necessary for operating onboard communication and safety equipment, including VHF radios, EPIRBs, and AIS transmitters.

Is my yacht eligible for St. Kitts and Nevis registration?

SKANReg allows the registration for pleasure and commercial yachts of unlimited tonnage, type, and length. There are no age restrictions, but vessels over 20 years old may be subject to inspection by a surveyor from SKANReg, before being accepted for registration.

Am I eligible for St. Kitts and Nevis registration?

Yes, SKANReg is an international open register, there are no restrictions on ownership of St. Kitts and Nevis yachts, this being applicable to both local and foreign corporations and individuals.

The Certificate of Registry

The St. Kitts and Nevis Certificate of Registry is a digital document that includes essential details such as:

  • Vessel name
  • CaribShip number
  • Ship type
  • Hull Identification Number (HIN)
  • Dimensions

Important: The Certificate of Registry is not proof of ownership. Ownership is determined through legal documents such as a Builder’s Certificate or Bill of Sale.

Representative Person (Maritime Resident Agent)

  • Required for all vessels over 24m in length unless owned by a St. Kitts or Nevis resident.
  • Must be a “regulated business” under the Proceeds of Crime Act, 2000.
  • If owned by a Nevis Business Corporation, the Maritime Resident Agent can be the same as the company’s resident agent

You can find a full list of available Resident Agents here.

Registration Validity

  • Provisional Registration – Vaid for 6-months, extendable once for another period of 3-months upon submission of the necessary documents to grant the extension.
  • Permanent Registration – Valid for 4-years from the date of first registration. This date of first registration is used to calculate when annual taxes are due and when certificates need to be renewed.

How long does full St. Kitts and Nevis registration take?

Processing time is dependent on availability of title documentation and signed application forms.

SKANReg aims to process yacht registration on the same day.

How much does St. Kitts and Nevis registration cost?
