Poland, officially known as the Republic of Poland, is a Central European country bordered by:

  • Germany to the west
  • Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south
  • Ukraine, Belarus, and Lithuania to the east
  • The Baltic Sea to the north

Poland’s modern maritime history began in 1918, when the country regained independence and established the Polish Maritime Administration. The Polish government developed its own legal system for ship registration to build a national fleet.

Following World War II and the fall of communism, Poland’s maritime laws were modernised to align with international standards. The country introduced its own maritime codes, and the Polish Register of Shipping (PRS) became an internationally recognised classification society.

Today, Poland operates two primary yacht registries:

  • Polish Register of Shipping
  • Polish Watercraft Register (REJA24)

When discussing yacht registration in Poland, most references are to the Polish Watercraft Register, which covers recreational craft. This page focuses on the REJA24 system. The Polish Register of Shipping applies only to yachts over 24 metres in length, those carrying more than 12 passengers, engaged in international voyages, or used for commercial charter.

The Flag

Yachts registered in Poland fly the national flag of Poland which is two horizontal stripes of equal width, the upper one white and the lower one red.

Note: only commercial and government vessels are permitted to fly the version of the flag featuring the national coat of arms in the white stripe.

Port of Registry

The official ports of registry under the Polish Watercraft Register are Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot, Hel, Kołobrzeg, Szczecin, Świnoujście, Police, Ustka, Władysławowo, Darłowo and Elbląg.

Radio Licensing

Radio licenses are issued directly by the Office of Electronic Communications (Urząd Komunikacji Elektronicznej, UKE) once the vessel is fully registered.

To apply, you must hold a radio operator’s certificate from a recognised ITU authority.

Holding a valid radio license is a legal requirement, as it assigns a Call Sign and MMSI number necessary for operating onboard communication and safety equipment, including VHF radios, EPIRBs, and AIS transmitters.

Is my yacht eligible for Polish registration?

The Polish Watercraft Register allows the registration of pleasure and commercial craft up to 24 metres in length.

Note: all commercial vessels and all pleasure craft over 15 metres in length require a technical survey once every year.

Am I eligible for Polish registration?

Non-EU and EEA citizens cannot register in their personal names but can register the vessel through an EU or EEA company.
