Guernsey, located in the English Channel near the Bay of St Malo, is a British Crown Dependency. While not part of the UK or EU, the UK Government is constitutionally responsible for its defence and international affairs.

Guernsey is a well-established international finance centre, known for its political stability, low taxation, and strong regulatory framework. These factors, combined with specific tax and crew employment advantages, make Guernsey a popular choice for yacht registration.

Guernsey is part of the Red Ensign Group (REG), operating its registry independently but under the oversight of the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

The Flag

Yachts registered in Guernsey may either fly the standard undefaced Red Ensign (“Red Duster”) or the Guernsey Red Ensign which incorporates the Guernsey gold cross.

Port of Registry

Despite Guernsey having several named harbours, the official Port of Registry in Guernsey is simply “GUERNSEY” and should be noted as such on vessel documents.

Note: ST. PETER PORT is not an official port of registry.

Radio Licensing

Guernsey relies on the UK communications regulator OFCOM, which issues ship radio licences for Guernsey registered yachts. Holding a valid radio licence is a legal requirement, as it assigns a Call Sign and MMSI number necessary for operating onboard communication and safety equipment, including VHF radios, EPIRBs, and AIS transmitters.

Is my yacht eligible for Guernsey registration?

The Guernsey ships registry is a Category 2 Red Ensign registry, allowing the registration of pleasure and commercial yachts of up to 150 Gross Tons (GT).

Am I eligible for Guernsey registration?

The Guernsey Ships register is open to:

  • British citizens and companies
  • Citizens and companies of British Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories (e.g. Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, St Helena and Turks & Caicos Islands).

The Certificate of British Registry

The Certificate of Registry (also known as the Blue Book, aptly named after the small blue protective cover the certificate is kept inside) is a traditional A3 sized paper document. The certificate includes essential details such as vessel name, official number, ship type, HIN, and dimensions.

Important: The Certificate of Registry is not proof of ownership. Ownership is determined through legal documents such as a Builder’s Certificate or Bill of Sale.

How long is the Guernsey registration valid?

The Guernsey full registration is valid for 10-years.

How much does Guernsey registration cost?

Our full registration package starts from £2,250.

Commercial use & compliance

Yachts up to 24 metres in length can operate commercially under a Guernsey registration if they meet the necessary commercial coding requirements.

Is there a Guernsey Small Ships Register (SSR)?

Yes, there is an SSR in Guernsey which is only available to those individuals who are ordinarily resident in Guernsey.

Does the yacht physically need to go to Guernsey for registration?

The yacht does not need to be physically present in Guernsey at any stage of the registration process.
