Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar and sharing a border with Spain to the north. The territory is situated on a narrow peninsula at the entrance of the Mediterranean Sea.

Gibraltar is a well-established international finance centre, known for its political stability, low taxation, and strong regulatory framework.

As part of the Red Ensign Group (REG), the Gibraltar Maritime Administration (GMA) boasts over 900 active pleasure yachts on the register since its establishment in 1997.

The Government of Gibraltar is committed to maintaining a high-quality register rather than simply increasing its size. The registry prioritizes keeping the average age of vessels as low as possible and carefully evaluates applications for vessels over 20 years old.

With its high standards, the Gibraltar Register of Shipping is recognized as a top-performing registry on the Paris MoU and Tokyo MoU White Lists.

The Flag

Yachts registered in Gibraltar may either fly the standard undefaced Red Ensign (“Red Duster”) or the Gibraltar Ensign which is defaced with the Gibraltar coat of arms on the right side.

Port of Registry

The only official port of registry in Gibraltar is GIBRALTAR.

Radio Licensing

The Gibraltar Regulatory Authority (GRA) is responsible for issuing Ship Station Licences for Gibraltar registered yachts. Holding a valid radio license is a legal requirement, as it assigns a Call Sign and MMSI number necessary for operating onboard communication and safety equipment, including VHF radios, EPIRBs, and AIS transmitters.

Is my yacht eligible for Gibraltar registration?

The Gibraltar register is a Category 1 administration, allowing registration for pleasure and commercial yachts of unlimited tonnage, type, and length.

Am I eligible for Gibraltar registration?

The Gibraltar register is an international registry, open to:

  • British citizens and companies
  • Citizens and companies from the European Union, European Economic Area, Commonwealth and British Overseas Territories
  • Citizens and companies from approved countries: Argentina, Aruba, Bahrain, Brazil, The Canary Islands, China (incl. Hong Kong), Faroe Islands, Haiti, Israel, Japan, Liberia, Madeira, Marshall Islands, Monaco, Panama, South Korea, Switzerland, Suriname, United Arab Emirates, United States of America.

Companies that do not meet the above criteria may still qualify by applying for eligibility as a Foreign Maritime Entity (FME).

If owners are not residents of Gibraltar or do not have a principal place of business there, they must appoint a representative person or registered agent based in Gibraltar.

The Certificate of British Registry

The Certificate of Registry is a digital document that includes essential details such as vessel name, official number, ship type, HIN, and dimensions.

Important: The Certificate of Registry is not proof of ownership. Ownership is determined through legal documents such as a Builder’s Certificate or Bill of Sale.

How long is the Gibraltar registration valid?

The Gibraltar registration is valid for a period of 12, 24, 36, 48 or 60 months depending on the selected period and associated fee at the time of initial registration.

Can I get a provisional Gibraltar registration?

Provisional registrations are available and valid for three months, with the option to extend for up to six months in total.

How long does full Gibraltar registration take?

Processing time is dependent on availability of title documentation and tonnage measurement survey.

Applications are typically processed within 24 hours once submitted to the registry.

How much does Gibraltar registration cost?

Our full registration package starts from £3,000.

Commercial Use & Compliance

Yachts can operate commercially under a Gibraltar registration if they meet the necessary commercial coding requirements.

Does the yacht physically need to go to Gibraltar for registration?
