The Cayman Islands is a United Kingdom Overseas Territory located in the Northwestern Caribbean Sea. The country has a population of about 57,000 persons spread over of 3 islands: Little Cayman, Cayman Brac and Grand Cayman.

The Cayman Islands is a well-established international finance centre, known for its solid political, legal, fiscal, and social environment in a stable parliamentary democracy which it has maintained since 1831.

The Cayman Islands Shipping Registry (CSR) has a European Regional Office in Southampton, UK and representatives in key yachting and shipping hubs, including the United States, Greece, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore, ensuring global accessibility and support.

As part of the Red Ensign Group (REG) the Cayman Islands has for many years been a preferred choice for the world’s superyachts. Recognised for high safety standards, the Cayman Islands is recognized as a top-performing registry on the Paris and Tokyo MoU White Lists.

The Flag

Yachts registered in the Cayman Islands may either fly the standard undefaced Red Ensign (“Red Duster”) or the Cayman Islands Civil Ensign which is defaced with the Cayman Islands coat of arms.

Note: the Cayman Islands Blue Ensign is used only on land and by government vessels.

Owners can choose from the three official ports of registry:

  • George Town
  • Bloody Bay
  • The Creek

Radio Licensing

The Cayman Islands Utility Regulation and Competition Office, OFREG, issues ship radio licences for Cayman Islands registered yachts. Holding a valid radio license is a legal requirement, as it assigns a Call Sign and MMSI number necessary for operating onboard communication and safety equipment, including VHF radios, EPIRBs, and AIS transmitters.

Is my yacht eligible for Cayman Islands registration?

The Cayman Islands register is a Category 1 administration, allowing registration for pleasure and commercial yachts of unlimited tonnage, type, and length.

Am I eligible for Cayman Islands registration?

The Cayman Islands register is an international registry, open to:

  • Cayman Islands citizens and companies
  • British citizens and companies
  • Citizens and companies from the European Union, European Economic Area, Commonwealth and British Overseas Territories and
  • Associated States, Principalities etc.
  • Citizens and companies from 46 approved third-schedule countries (see Shipping Notice 04/2010 REV 4)

The Certificate of British Registry

The Certificate of Registry is an original document which is US A4 sized that includes essential details such as vessel name, official number, ship type, HIN, and dimensions.

Important: The Certificate of Registry is not proof of ownership. Ownership is determined through legal documents such as a Builder’s Certificate or Bill of Sale.

How long is the Cayman Islands registration valid?

The full registration is valid indefinitely providing the Annual Tonnage Fee is paid each year.

How much does Cayman Islands registration cost?

Commercial Use & Compliance

Yachts can operate commercially under Cayman Islands registration if they meet the necessary commercial coding requirements.

Is there a Cayman Islands Small Ships Register (SSR)?

There is no Small Ships Register (SSR) in the Cayman Islands.

Does the yacht physically need to go to the Cayman Islands for registration?

The yacht does not need to be physically present in the Cayman Islands at any stage of the registration process.

Do I need a Cayman Islands Representative Person?

All Cayman Islands registered vessels which are not Cayman owned must appoint a local Representative Person.

The local Representative Person must be authorised to provide such a service as a regulated business in the financial services sector in the Cayman Islands.

Required Documentation

Basic requirements for Cayman Islands full registration:

  • Three preferred vessel name choices
  • Title documents (Builder’s Certificate, Bills of Sale, etc.)
  • Tonnage certification (we assist with surveys)
  • Deletion certificate (if previously registered under another flag)
  • Commercial certification (if applicable)

Additionally, we require a signed letter of engagement and owner due diligence verification.

Safety Equipment Requirements

Yachts under 13.7m: No statutory requirements.

Yachts over 13.7m: Must comply with the Merchant Shipping Regulations, including:

  • Radar reflector
  • Life-saving signal table
  • Navigational lights and day shapes
  • Sound signalling equipment
  • Life jackets for all onboard
