The British Virgin Islands (BVI), officially the Virgin Islands, is a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean, east of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands and to the north-west of Anguilla.

The BVI is a well-established international finance centre, known for its solid political, legal, fiscal, and social environment. The local economy primarily relies on financial services and tourism.

Yacht registrations in the BVI are administered by the Virgin Islands Shipping & Maritime Authority (VISR), formerly known as the British Virgin Islands Shipping Registry. The governing legislation is the BVI Merchant Shipping Act 2001, which is based on the UK Merchant Shipping Act 1995.

As part of the Red Ensign Group (REG), VISR has for many years been a preferred choice for yacht and superyacht registrations. Through its office in London, UK and global network of surveyors the goal of VISR is to provide an efficient worldwide service.

The Flag

Yachts registered in the British Virgin Islands may either fly the standard undefaced Red Ensign (“Red Duster”) or the British Virgin Islands Civil Ensign which is defaced with the British Virgin Islands coat of arms.

Port of Registry

Owners can choose from the three official ports of registry:

Radio Licensing

The British Virgin Islands Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, TRC, issues ship radio licences for BVI registered yachts. Holding a valid radio license is a legal requirement, as it assigns a Call Sign and MMSI number necessary for operating onboard communication and safety equipment, including VHF radios, EPIRBs, and AIS transmitters.
