As we have previously reported, Greece is in the process of introducing a new crusing tax for yachts operating in Greek waters.
The tax was due to have become effective on the 1st January, 2014 but we understand that the Greek government has delayed its introduction.
In the event of the tax coming into being the tax will be collected by a new online Greek taxation system known as TAXIS.
As the system is not yet fully operational and training is required for the agents who will collect the tax it is likely that in the event of the tax being introduced that there will be a new date for the tax actually becoming effective.
The tax will be applied to all sailing and motor yachts and will most likely be levied on the following basis:
|Yacht Length||Annual Tax (Euros)|
|Between 7.00 and 8.00 metres in length||200.00|
|Between 8.01 and 10.00 metres in length||300.00|
|Between 10.01 and 12.00 metres in length||400.00|
|12.01 metres in length and over||100.00 per metre per calendar yearorEUR 10.00 per metre per month*|
*Our understanding is that the payment at EUR 10.00 per metre per month will be applied on a pro rata basis, i.e. if the vessel stays 5 days and departs Greek waters then it will not have to pay upon re-entry for the next 25 days but if the vessel stays one day over the 30 day total then a second month will be payable.
Yachts that are immobilised will most likely not have to pay the tax until such time as they are launched and used.
Whilst yachts that are transiting through Greek waters and not stopping in Greece will have no obligation to pay it is still unclear whether a yacht navigating through the Corinth canal will be regarded as a vessel in transit.
The Cruising Association have also been working hard on lobbying the Greek government and their website contains further useful information on the following link: New Greek Cruising Tax
Oceanskies already works closely with a leading yacht agent in Greece to handle all Greek cruising formalities on behalf of its client yachts to ensure that they are able to safely navigate their way around the applicable rules, regulations and VAT import/export formalities regardless of whether they are privately or commercially operated.
